The Future of Agriculture: Hanoi’s High-Tech Farming Revolution

THE HANOI TIMES — Hanoi has been at the forefront of embracing hi-tech and digital technology in agriculture, with a specific focus on cultivation, animal husbandry, and aquaculture. This is according to Doan Duc Dan, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Agricultural Extension Center.

According to Dan, Hanoi aims to increase the number of high-tech agricultural entities, including models, farms, cooperatives, and enterprises, by 10%-20% annually from now until 2030.

The city is encouraging local producers, businesses, and cooperatives to embrace smart agriculture and electronic farms, as well as integrate into distribution channels and focus on quality control.

Local farmers and firms have been proactive in adopting automation, biotechnology, and computerization. These technologies offer a multitude of benefits, such as cost savings, increased productivity, enhanced product quality, and a reduced environmental footprint.

Hanoi’s large enterprises have been particularly drawn to high-tech agriculture, leveraging biotechnology, greenhouse technology, automatic sensor technology, automatic grids, and hydroponics to optimize their operations.

Thieu Van Son, Chairman of the Dan Phuong District Farmers’ Association, shared with The Hanoi Times that the city has successfully established 160 high-tech agricultural models. These models encompass cultivation, animal husbandry, aquaculture, and cultivation and farming, with a concentration in Me Linh, Gia Lam, Thuong Tin, Dong Anh, Thanh Oai, and Dan Phuong districts.

Notable enterprises in this sector include Thanh Cao Kinoko, with their Japanese technology mushroom production model in My Duc District; Da Ton Integrated Agricultural Service Cooperatives, specializing in hydroponic vegetable production in Gia Lam District; and Dan Hoai Cooperative, known for their orchid production in Dan Phuong District.

Deputy Director Doan Duc Dan shared his vision for Hanoi’s agricultural future, which includes establishing a high-tech agricultural center, along with dozens of high-tech agricultural zones, and recognizing at least 10 high-tech agricultural enterprises.

To support this ambitious sector, Hanoi has launched a program for agricultural development with high-tech applications for 2026-2030. The goal is to increase the contribution of high-tech agricultural products to up to 70% of the city’s total agricultural output.

Notably, the program aims for 100% of animal products to originate from large and industrial farms that have implemented at least one high technology solution. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of production-processing-consumption chains that utilize high technology for product quality management and traceability.

“We are committed to removing policy obstacles that may hinder the development of high-tech applications in production,” assured the official. “We will also provide training in high-tech applications and market development to ensure the success of this initiative.”

Currently, high-tech agricultural products account for over 35% of the total value of agricultural production in Hanoi. This has led to significant improvements in productivity and income for agricultural cooperatives, farms, and craft villages across the city.
