The Magic of Cultural Travel: Vietnamese Parents Embrace Domestic Explorations for Stronger Family Bonds

THE HANOI TIMES — Giang Dinh, a visitor from Lam Dong in Vietnam’s Central Highlands, vividly recounts her stroll through the leafy alleys of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, enticed by the lively calls of street vendors and the tantalizing aroma of bun rieu wafting from sidewalk stalls.

“The Old Quarter’s vibrant street life, with its narrow lanes, bustling sounds, and enticing smells, captivated us,” she shared with The Hanoi Times during her recent two-week sojourn in the capital. “It offered a unique cultural experience that left a lasting impression.”

With summer 2025 approaching, Giang’s story resonates with many Vietnamese families. An increasing number are opting for domestic travel, not merely for leisure, but as a means to forge stronger bonds, expose their children to diverse cultures, and create intergenerational memories.

Varun Grover, Country Head for Vietnam at Booking.com, affirms that Hanoi is emerging as a favored choice for families seeking meaningful city getaways. “The city’s rich history, culinary delights, and evolving family-friendly infrastructure make it an attractive option for those wishing to explore a new culture without venturing too far,” he explains.

Hanoi presents travelers of all ages with a unique blend of historical charm, modern conveniences, and accessible cultural experiences. Whether it’s a leisurely cyclo ride through ancient streets, a weekend night market, or a traditional performance, Hanoi provides families with interactive ways to discover its heritage.

The city’s culinary scene is another major draw, boasting an array of street food options and local specialties that cater to both adventurous foodies and discerning young palates. Hanoi’s recent focus on pedestrian-friendly areas and enhanced public amenities makes it even more appealing to families seeking a relaxing urban escape.

This change in perspective has led to a deeper integration of travel into family routines, with 58% of Vietnamese parents prioritizing annual trips, regardless of external factors. Moreover, 41% plan to increase their travel budget this year, reflecting a desire for more meaningful and enriching experiences.

While international destinations, especially within the Asia-Pacific region, retain their allure, domestic tourism remains the heart of summer plans. Coastal cities like Danang, Nha Trang, and Phu Quoc continue to be family favorites, offering relaxation and child-friendly activities. Highland and central retreats, such as Da Lat and Quy Nhon, are also on the rise, attracting visitors with their temperate climates and outdoor adventures.

As summer commences, domestic travel remains more than just a leisure activity; it is a deliberate act of reconnection. Destinations like Hanoi, with their multi-generational appeal and blend of old and new, remind us that sometimes, the most memorable journeys begin in our own backyard.
